Transmedia

With the enormous increase of information sharing across digital devices, accessing this information has opened another world of possibilities for learners, commonly known as Transmedia. Transmedia is enhancing and expanding how we learn by telling a story or conveying information across a range of digital medias. Transmedia can take different forms depending on its purpose, the context of the information, and the audience it intends to reach (Alper & Herr-Stephenson, 2013). The world is extensively networked and there is a digital expectancy that students are able to find information, reproduce and construct their own meaning from this information. VeRa Rex (2013) explains, “ Our brain looks for a story to make sense of information”.

In the education environment, Transmedia Play is a phrase coined to explain the opportunities students have to experiment with media and information across a variety of forums (Alper et al., 2013). In this way they are encouraged to play with devices and applications to gain competency both with the hardware and the various ways that information is presented. Using Transmedia Play, teachers have the ability to engage and encourage students in an interactive and meaningful way, to research information from a variety of forums (Fleming, 2013).

Transmedia play is accessible for most students; it can be social in its interaction through the use of tweets, instagram and facebook; it encourages discussion and collaboration; and it is mobile across devices and media’s (Alper et al., 2013). It develops resourcefulness in students to inquire and respond to information and also to create or produce their own media with information they have sourced. Visual information and physical interaction embeds itself more quickly into the brain and subsequently lasts longer (VeRa Rex, Youtube). A strong endorsement for teaching with Transmedia is that it is ‘replayable’ (Alper et al., 2013) and allows students to see the same information repeatedly to gain a deeper understanding of what is being conveyed. They are also able to see the information from a range of perspectives, allowing understanding for varying learning styles.

Transmedia learning can happen anywhere and at any time, enhancing the learning experience by reaching learners in an exciting, multi-dimensional manner (Flemming, 2013). This allows the opportunity for individuals to focus on their own strengths and explore, interpret and re-create information in meaningful ways.

The Following Video tells an interesting story of Transmedia

Follow the link below to a really interesting example of Transmedia storytelling that could be incorporated into the Primary years. Dr Pamela Rutledge outlines how the story of THE 3 LITTLE PIGS could be expanded in a learning environment and used across medias. It’s a really engaging and exciting idea.
